At a staff meeting in early February, the staff at the Good Learning Anywere (GLA) project decided that we really wanted to acknowledge and celebrate Family Day in some way. Being the newest holiday added to our calendars and one that occurs smack dab in the middle of the February blahs, what is not to celebrate??!!

However, we needed to come up with a plan for how we were going to celebrate it. What should we do? After some discussion, we realized that a strong common thread among our learners is that they all share a deep love for their families. I can’t count how many amazing family stories that learners have voluntarily shared with me and their fellow students during a class.

The eloquence and reverence they display when talking about their children, their mothers, their fathers, their grandparents, etc. constantly humbles me and reminds me of what is important in life. I am always grateful for these teachings.

So it was decided. We would celebrate Family Day by capturing some of these wonderful stories in print. We put the call out to learners and friends of the Good Learning Anywhere project asking them to share their family stories with us. A few would be selected and become published authors online. Very exciting!

The response was terrific. We received some really wonderful submissions that were incredibly moving. The honesty and vulnerability of the writing astounds me yet again.

A big thank you goes out to Lennie Spence, Nina Whitehead, Lillian Ruttan, Bruce Eisener and Linda De Bruyn for their courage and willingness to share their personal stories with all of us. We have published them online in a GLOG ~an online interactive poster.

This is our GLA Family Stories glog. Click and Enjoy!
