Congratulations Heather Langford for being Good Learning Anywhere’s April Learner of the Month!

As many of you may know by now, Sioux Hudson Literacy Council and the Good Learning Anywhere program have been celebrating and showcasing our learners each month.  In typical fashion, we ask a few questions to the learner and they answer them so we can share their success story.

Upon notifying Heather that she was nominated as April’s Learner of the Month, Heather wrote us back the following message.  This is her response in her own words:

Thank you Julie,

What a surprise! Not only did I get a lot out of the courses, now I have an ipod Nano! Doesn’t get any better than that!

For years I’ve wanted to upgrade my skills but never thought someone of my age would be accepted. After talking to people (Employment Services is where I found out about GLA) it convinced me this was a good idea.

Now I’ve been enrolled for seven months, I kick myself for not doing this sooner! On the one hand, I feel I’m not as bad as I thought and on the other hand, I was really hungry to learn. I’ve been doing the same type of work for many years and it is so nice to get my brain thinking again! Anybody who wants to upgrade their skills, just go for it, ask educators, employment centres, or just go online to GLA – an excellent place to start!

When I first started, I felt quite uncomfortable being in a room with strangers, talking on a computer. I ended up getting my own headset and microphone so I could attend classes in the comfort of my own home (I was usually in p.j.s). For me, there was less distractions and I felt more relaxed.

I think my greatest achievement was completing all my courses. I went into this hoping to learn – about computers, office skills, and myself, and I feel I have taken so much more away from this experience, I am rather proud! I tried to participate as much as I could, but enjoyed all the feedback and opinions of others as well. I have come away being a much more confident individual.

I hope I will continue with learning, just makes me feel so alive! But the ultimate goal is to find that “dream” job. No matter, I know now that I’ll never be too old to learn!

Once again, I do want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have made me feel very special!

Congratulations Heather!  Keep up the great work!
