There are many strategies for changing your habits; stopping, starting, replacement, reduction, increasing, and piggy-backing, and I’d like to give you many small pieces of advice to keep your strategy from failing. Step aside Monday, this is a job for coffee

  • Strive for progress, not perfection. Doing it completely right, every time, all the time isn’t possible.
  • Remember that it’s okay to fail. But that doesn’t mean you give up. Get back up and start again, as soon as possible. So forgive yourself as quickly as possible and get back to it.
  • Commit to the change in front of others, OR don’t. There have been studies done with conflicting results. Sometimes people achieve their goals when they communicate it to other people. Sometimes it derails them. Change it up and see what works for you.
  • Break it down into small, measurable, and very realistic actions. That way you’re writing your own story, and not just letting life happen to you.
  • Celebrate every time you meet those little goals. It will also help build your self-esteem.
  • You only have a set amount of willpower every day. So use it sparingly. Try making your change as easy on you as possible if you can help it.
  • Slow down. Think about what you’re doing as you’re doing it. You’ll not only appreciate the change more, but you’ll get to enjoy yourself while doing it.
  • Don’t make too many changes at once. Just like multi-tasking, something may fall to the wayside completely. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve left my full coffee at home because of rushing in the morning.
  • Collect useful tools, not time-wasting distractions.
  • Plan to win, and prepare wisely. You can do it.
