Motivation is easy to come by: you want stuff, you want to do things, you need to do a lot of stuff, and need things. But motivation is also easy to lose: you get tired, you get frustrated, things aren’t going well around you, or maybe you’re not feeling well emotionally, physically, or even spiritually.

So how you build motivation that lasts? Well, the first thing when you want to do anything is to take good care of yourself, but after that there are basically thousands of books written about getting stuff, doing things, and learning things. So what is common about all those thousands of books that will fit into this post? These few ways of getting more motivated.

Build your self-efficacy

This just means that you must believe you can do it. You can perform that task. You can achieve your goals. When starting something new or big, set a small goal, one you can reach on the first day. This way, you’re making sure you’re doing it. You gain an early success and feel positive about it. You can also watch others who are succeeding or have succeeded. You’ll learn how you can do it, you’ll see how it’s done well, and more importantly; you’ll again feel positively about yourself from the experience. Also, try and find someone supportive of you and your goals. They’ll cheer you on and not let you give up. One more time, you’ll feel positive about yourself. Your belief in yourself well soar and you’ll have stronger determination to go and do it.

Try betting on it.

The summer is quickly approaching and you’re not ready for a fun summer, but let’s say you want to start losing body fat, for example. Bet someone a considerable amount ($20.00 is considerable, you don’t have to bet the family car.) and give it to them as soon as possible, then bet them you’re going to lose a certain amount of fat, weight, or just get yourself to feeling good about your body. If you don’t make your goal, they keep the bet money. Look at that, you’re motivated to get that considerable amount of money back, by succeeding in your goal.

Set a smarter goal.

I know you’ve seen this one posted around the Internet: set a goal that is (S)pecific, (M)easurable, (A)ttainable, (R)ealistic, and (T)imely. Basically, break down your big goal into little (M)easurable chunks that (S)pecifically follow a (T)imeline that you know is (R)ealistically (A)ttainable at every point, even the end.

Ta-Da! I just delivered you motivation on a platter. Whatever it is, you can do it.

National Aboriginal Day is a day recognising and celebrating the cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples of Canada.
